Tendulkar Anderson Trophy 2025 : The cricketing world is abuzz with anticipation as the 2025 Test series between England and India is set to be contested for the newly named Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. This historic renaming marks a significant moment in the storied rivalry between the two nations, paying tribute to two of cricket’s greatest icons—Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. As the series kicks off on June 20 at Headingly, Leeds, let’s dive into what makes this trophy and the upcoming series so special.

A Tribute to Two Legends
The Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy honors two players who have left an indelible mark on Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian batting maestro, remains the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15,921 runs across 200 matches from 1989 to 2013. His elegant stroke play and unmatched consistency made him a global icon, inspiring generations of cricketers. On the other side, James Anderson, England’s legendary fast bowler, retired in July 2024 as the most successful pace bowler in Test history with 704 wickets in 188 matches. His mastery of swing bowling and relentless accuracy made him a formidable opponent, particularly against India, where he claimed 149 wickets.
The two faced each other in 14 Tests between 2006 and 2012, with Anderson dismissing Tendulkar nine times—more than any other bowler in the Indian legend’s career. Their on-field battles were a spectacle, blending Tendulkar’s artistry with Anderson’s precision. Naming the trophy after them is a fitting tribute to their contributions and the thrilling duels that defined this rivalry. As Anderson himself said, “It’s a huge honour. Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up… I couldn’t be more proud.”

The Controversy: Replacing the Pataudi Trophy
The decision to rename the series from the Pataudi Trophy, which had been awarded since 2007 to commemorate 75 years of India-England Test matches, has sparked debate. The Pataudi Trophy was named after Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, two iconic figures who bridged the cricketing histories of both nations. Iftikhar played for England and India, while Mansur, known as “Tiger” Pataudi, became India’s youngest Test captain and a revered leader.
Critics, including former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and Mansur’s wife, Sharmila Tagore, expressed disappointment over the decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy. Gavaskar called it a “total lack of sensitivity” to the Pataudi family’s legacy, while former cricketer Saad Bin Jung described it as a “disregard for the cricketing community.” In response to the backlash, reports indicate that Sachin Tendulkar himself intervened, urging the ECB and BCCI to preserve the Pataudi legacy. As a result, there are plans to introduce a medallion named after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi to be awarded to the winning captain, ensuring the Pataudi name remains part of the series.

A Postponed Unveiling
The Tendulkar Anderson Trophy was planned to be unveiled on June 14, 2025, during the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, with both Tendulkar and Anderson present. But the ceremony was postponed after a tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad that took 275 lives. Out of respect for the victims, the ECB and BCCI decided to delay the launch. A senior ECB official said, “Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait, the announcement may wait a while.” A new date for the unveiling is yet to be confirmed, but the gesture underscores the sensitivity of both boards to the broader context.
