The wait is over. On December 19, 2024, James Gunn unveiled the first teaser trailer for Superman (2025), the flagship film of the newly rebooted DC Universe (DCU). With its emotional resonance, iconic imagery, and a glimpse of Metropolis buzzing with superheroes, the trailer has fans hyped for what’s shaping up to be a bold reinvention of the world’s most iconic superhero. Here’s everything you need to know about the trailer and why it’s got the internet buzzing.
A Trailer Packed with Emotion and Music
Unlike typical superhero trailers that lean heavily on dialogue and bombast, the Superman teaser takes a different approach. It’s light on spoken lines and heavy on atmosphere, driven by a guitar-heavy, rock-infused soundtrack that sets a unique tone. Posts on X describe it as “very emotional” with “heartwarming scenes,” and they’re not wrong. The trailer opens with sweeping shots of Metropolis, transitions to quiet moments of Clark Kent’s vulnerability, and crescendos with Superman soaring through the skies. This balance of human and heroic feels like Gunn’s signature touch—grounded yet aspirational.
The music, described as having a “rock/guitar theme,” amplifies the trailer’s emotional weight. It’s less about hyping up action (though there’s plenty of that) and more about reintroducing Superman as a symbol of hope. Fans on X have noted the trailer’s focus on “heartwarming” moments, possibly hinting at Clark’s relationships with Lois Lane, his parents, or even Krypto the Super-Dog, who makes a charming appearance.
Key Highlights from the Trailer
The teaser clocks in at just over two minutes but packs in a lot. Here are the standout elements:
- Clark Kent and Lois Lane: The trailer gives us our first look at David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Their chemistry shines in brief, tender moments, suggesting a romance that’s central to the story. Expect a Lois who’s as fearless and sharp as ever.
- Metropolis and the DCU: The city of Metropolis looks vibrant and lived-in, with glimpses of other superheroes in the background. Posts on X hint at “brief important appearances,” possibly teasing characters like Green Lantern or Hawkgirl, who are confirmed for the film. This sets the stage for a connected DCU right out of the gate.
- Krypto Steals the Show: James Gunn himself teased Krypto’s role, and the Super-Dog delivers. Whether he’s flying alongside Superman or causing some canine chaos, Krypto adds a playful energy that fans are already loving.
- Action and Kaiju Vibes: The trailer doesn’t skimp on spectacle. From Superman battling massive threats to a kaiju-like creature looming over Metropolis, the action sequences promise epic scale. Fans on X are buzzing about the “kaiju” nod, which could hint at a monstrous villain or an unexpected twist.
- Emotional Core: Above all, the trailer emphasizes Superman’s humanity. Whether it’s Clark reflecting on his role or saving lives with quiet determination, the film seems poised to explore what makes Superman a hero beyond his powers.
James Gunn’s Vision
As the architect of the DCU, James Gunn is no stranger to blending heart and humor (think Guardians of the Galaxy). His take on Superman feels like a love letter to the character’s roots while pushing him into a modern, interconnected universe. The trailer’s focus on emotion over exposition suggests Gunn is prioritizing character over plot reveals, a smart move for a reboot. His post on X, “Krypto, take us home,” captures the playful yet heartfelt vibe he’s bringing to the project.
Gunn’s choice to lean on music and visuals also sets this Superman apart from past iterations, like Zack Snyder’s darker, more operatic Man of Steel. Fan-made trailers on X have even reimagined the teaser in Snyder’s style, highlighting how distinct Gunn’s approach is.
