Varanasi Movie : If you’ve been anywhere near social media or film forums lately, you’ve probably heard the whispers turning into roars: Varanasi is coming, and it’s not just a movie—it’s a cultural odyssey wrapped in spectacle. Directed by the visionary S.S. Rajamouli, fresh off his Oscar-sweeping triumph with RRR, this Telugu-language epic is poised to be the most ambitious Indian film yet. Announced just weeks ago in a star-studded Hyderabad event, Varanasi (formerly SSMB29 and Globetrotter) promises to blend mythology, adventure, and jaw-dropping action on a scale that rivals Hollywood blockbusters. As someone who’s followed Rajamouli’s journey from Baahubali to global domination, I couldn’t be more excited. Let’s dive into what makes this film a must-watch event.
The Genesis: From Dream to Destiny
Rajamouli has always drawn from India’s rich tapestry of stories, but Varanasi hits closer to home—literally. Set against the eternal ghats of Kashi (Varanasi), the film explores themes of heritage, redemption, and the timeless human spirit. The director revealed during the launch that the idea sparked over a decade ago, in 2010, but it simmered on the backburner until post-RRR euphoria. Co-written with his father, the legendary V. Vijayendra Prasad, the script was locked in 2024 after years of globetrotting research.
What elevates Varanasi Movie ? It’s Rajamouli’s unapologetic fusion of Eastern lore with Western adventure tropes. Think Indiana Jones meets Raiders of the Lost Ark, but infused with Hanuman’s valor and the spiritual depth of the Ganges. The emotional core? A high-stakes quest involving time-travel artifacts hidden in ancient temples, forcing the protagonist to confront his past while safeguarding India’s soul. At a whopping ₹1,200 crore budget (edging out only the upcoming Ramayana as India’s priciest), this isn’t cinema—it’s a revolution.
Meet the Titans: A Cast That’s Pure Fire
No Rajamouli film is complete without a powerhouse ensemble, and Varanasi Movie delivers. Leading the charge is Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu as Rudra, a rugged explorer channeling Hanuman’s indomitable strength. This marks Babu’s 29th lead role (hence the original SSMB29 tag), and early buzz from set leaks suggests he’s unleashing a performance that’s equal parts brooding intensity and explosive charisma.
Opposite him? None other than global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas, stepping into her first Telugu gig and her maiden collaboration with Rajamouli. Sources hint at her playing a fierce archaeologist with secrets tied to Rudra’s lineage—chemistry alert! And then there’s Prithviraj Sukumaran as the shadowy antagonist, whom Rajamouli calls “one of my finest creations.” Prithviraj, riding high from Aadujeevitham, brings a chilling edge that’s already sparking “villain of the year” debates.
The supporting cast is a melting pot of talent, blending Tollywood regulars with Bollywood crossovers. While full announcements are trickling in, expect cameos that could steal scenes—Rajamouli’s specialty.
Varanasi Movie : Crafting a Visual Symphony
Production kicked off with a sacred muhurat puja in January 2025, and principal photography has been a whirlwind ever since. Starting in Hyderabad, the team jetted to Tanzania and Kenya for raw, untamed chase sequences, then looped back to Odisha for lush Indian backdrops. But the real magic? Recreating ancient Kashi on massive soundstages, complete with VFX-heavy time-warps that make Baahubali‘s battles look quaint.
The dream team is stacked:
- Cinematography: P.S. Vinod, capturing the golden hues of Varanasi’s sunrises like poetry in motion.
- VFX: V. Srinivas Mohan, pushing boundaries with seamless time-travel effects.
- Editing: Bikkina Thammiraju, ensuring the 210-minute runtime flies by.
- Music: M.M. Keeravani (Rajamouli’s cousin and RRR‘s Oscar-winning composer), who’s teasing folk-infused anthems that could soundtrack a revolution.
Producers Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business are betting big, aiming for IMAX dominance with native 1.43:1 sequences. Originally eyed as a two-parter (2027 and 2029), it’s now a single, epic feature—whew, talk about director’s cut overload!
